Modifying existing building blocks

Last updated: 23 December 2025 16:29 BST

SiteSolve provides tools to adjust, delete, or structurally modify existing building blocks, giving users full control over the site layout and building massing. These capabilities allow designers to respond to changing project requirements, refine design ideas, and explore alternative configurations without starting from scratch.

Adjustments can include repositioning, resizing, or altering the shape of building blocks, helping to optimise the site layout and maintain compliance with planning constraints. Structural modifications allow changes to the internal organisation of massing, such as breaking up larger blocks, combining smaller ones, or editing specific elements to better fit the site context.

Edit buildings

Editing buildings allows users to adjust the massing of a building by moving surfaces, changing proportions, or aligning blocks with other site features. This is useful for refining relationships between buildings, improving sunlight exposure, or shaping façades to respond to views and streetscape.

  1. Navigate to Create in the main menu and proceed to Edit buildings.
  2. Select Edit to modify an existing building.
  3. Select the building you want to modify.
  4. Identify the surface to move.
  5. Drag the surface to the desired position and confirm.

Divide linear block

Dividing large residential buildings into smaller blocks supports variety, better light access, and phasing flexibility. This improves daylight, ventilation, and community scale while supporting phased construction plans.

  1. Navigate to Create in the main menu and proceed to Edit buildings.
  2. Select Divide linear block.
  3. Hover over the apartment block until the dashed red line appears where you want to split it.
  4. Click the mouse or press Enter to apply the split.

Edit Block Spines

Editing block spines allows changes to the orientation or curvature of a building by adjusting its central axis. This helps align buildings with surrounding geometry, enhance pedestrian flow, or capture key sightlines.

  1. Navigate to Create in the main menu and proceed to Edit buildings.
  2. Select Edit Block Spines.
  3. Select the building’s spine.
  4. Move the control points to create the desired alignment.
  5. Confirm the new shape.

Add vertex to boundary block

Adding vertices lets users insert additional control points into a building footprint for more complex or precise shapes. This enables creative layouts and adapts standard forms to challenging or unique site conditions.

  1. Navigate to Create in the main menu and proceed to Edit buildings.
  2. Select Add vertex to boundary block.
  3. Choose where you want more control.
  4. Add the new vertex point.
  5. Adjust its position to refine the footprint.

Edit block boundaries

Editing block boundaries allows adjustments to the footprint of perimeter-defined buildings, such as offices or podiums. This ensures blocks match plot lines, improve public space edges, or adapt to irregular site shapes.

  1. Navigate to Create in the main menu and proceed to Edit buildings.
  2. Select Edit block boundaries.
  3. Select the block boundary and drag control points to reshape the footprint.
  4. Confirm changes.

Delete building blocks

Deleting building blocks removes unwanted buildings from a scheme to simplify the layout or clear space for new ideas. This keeps the design focused and uncluttered, allowing new elements to be introduced as the vision evolves.

  1. Navigate to Create in the main menu and proceed to Edit buildings.
  2. Select Delete buildings.
  3. Select the building(s) to remove.
  4. Confirm deletion.

By combining these modification tools with SiteSolve’s generative design and analysis capabilities, users can iteratively refine projects and balance multiple objectives. This allows well-informed decisions throughout the design process.
