Setting up a site boundary

Last updated: 23 December 2025 16:29 BST

Defining a site boundary is a fundamental step in SiteSolve, establishing the spatial limits within which all design activities will take place. Accurate boundary setting ensures that the generated building geometry, massing options, and analysis results are correctly aligned with the project’s real-world constraints.

The creation of a site boundary in SiteSolve can be accomplished through several methods, each suited to different types of project data.

Drawing a site boundary

  1. Go to Set up a site option in the main menu and select ‘Boundary’.
  2. Select the ‘Draw Site Boundary’ option.
  3. Click in the viewport to place points, creating the boundary line point by point.
  4. Enter specific measurements using your keyboard, or simply click to place each point.
  5. Complete the boundary by clicking back on the first point or pressing Enter. The completed boundary will appear as a dashed red line.

Creating a site boundary from curves

  1. Import a map or CAD drawing that contains the boundary lines.
  2. Go to Set up a site option in the main menu and select ‘Boundary’, then click ‘Create Site Boundary from Curves’.
  3. Hover over the boundary line in the imported data and click to select it. The line must form a closed loop to be used as a boundary.
  4. Once selected, SiteSolve will automatically generate the boundary, which will appear as a dashed red line.

Creating a site boundary from surfaces

  1. Import a map or CAD file that includes surface data.
  2. Go to Set up a site option in the main menu and select ‘Boundary’, then click ‘Create site boundary from Surface’.
  3. Hover over the surface you want to use as the boundary, then click to select it. A pink circle and a vertical dashed line will guide you in setting the height for the site.
  4. Adjust the height as needed, then click to complete the boundary. The boundary will be displayed as a dashed red polygon.

Editing a site boundary

Post-creation, site boundaries may require adjustments to reflect changes in project scope or to correct inaccuracies. SiteSolve provides several tools for editing boundaries.

  • Editing boundary points
By selecting the ‘Edit Site Boundary’ option, individual points along the boundary can be adjusted. Each editable point is highlighted with a blue box, which can be dragged to the desired location.

  • Adjusting site elevation
The ‘Set Site Elevation’ tool allows for the adjustment of the boundary’s elevation by hovering over the boundary and moving the mouse to set the correct height. This feature is particularly useful for projects involving varied topography.

  • Deleting a site boundary
If removal of a boundary is required, the ‘Delete Site Boundaries’ option on the Site toolbar facilitates this. Selection of the boundary area results in its removal, allowing for the creation of a new boundary if necessary.
Accuracy is key

Before creating the boundary, review and clean any imported data, such as maps or CAD drawings, to ensure they align correctly with real-world conditions. Keep in mind the site’s topography and access points as you define the boundary to ensure your design options are realistic and viable.

As your project progresses, regularly review the site boundary to ensure it still fits the project’s needs. If the site or project scope changes, update the boundary promptly to maintain accuracy.
