Importing files
Last updated: 23 December 2025 16:29 BSTThe importing of various file types into SiteSolve allows for seamless integration of external data. This article provides guidance on the process for importing images, map data, 3D models and CAD drawings into SiteSolve.
Supported file types
SiteSolve supports the import of the following file types:
- Map Data: Directly from OpenStreetMap
- 3D Models: DXF, FBX
- CAD Drawings: DXF, FBX
- Images: JPG, PNG
Importing map data from OpenStreetMap
- Navigate to Set up site in the main menu, then in the Geometry menu click on ‘Import from OpenStreetMap’.
- Enter the address or coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the location you wish to import.
- Set a default height for surrounding buildings where height data is not available.
SiteSolve will automatically generate 3D volumes of surrounding buildings if sufficient mapping data is available.
Importing 3D models and CAD drawings (DXF/FBX)
- Navigate to Set up site in the main menu, then in the Geometry menu click on ‘Import DXF’ or ‘Import FBX’.
- Browse the Project Drive and Personal Drive and select the DXF/FBX file to import.
- Upon import, you can choose to auto-adjust the origin if the model does not appear in the viewport or retain the current origin.
- You may also clear any existing surroundings context if required.
Importing an Image
- Navigate to Set up site in the main menu, then in the Reference image menu click on ‘Import Image’.
- Browse to select the JPG or PNG file you wish to import.
- Once imported, you can rotate and scale the image using the Adjust Image and Scale Image tools.
Best practices
Verify data compatibility
Before importing, check that your files are in a format supported by SiteSolve. Using unsupported formats may cause errors or incomplete imports. Matching the software version between the source and destination projects also helps avoid compatibility issues.
Organise files and data
Keep files clearly named and stored in a well-structured folder system. Consistent naming conventions make it easier to manage multiple versions or similar datasets, while good organisation helps avoid clutter in your project directory.
Create backups
Save a backup of your project before importing new data. This ensures you have a restore point if something goes wrong. Version control or saving separate copies at different stages can help track changes and recover earlier versions when needed.
Clean and validate data
Review your data before importing. Remove duplicates, fix inconsistencies, and make sure all required fields are complete. Where possible, check 3D models or CAD drawings in their source software to catch any errors early.
Optimise after import
Once imported, adjust positioning, scaling, and rotation so your data aligns correctly with the project parameters. Confirm it meets all constraints, such as site boundaries or building heights. For large or complex datasets, keep file sizes manageable and ensure your computer meets the required specifications for smooth performance.
