SketchUp plugin

Last updated: 23 December 2025 16:29 BST

The VU.CITY SketchUp Plugin is a standalone application designed to facilitate the export of SketchUp (SKP) models to FBX format. This guide covers its key features, installation, usage, and export settings.

The VU.CITY SketchUp plugin is installed and maintained via the VU.CITY Auto-Update Service. This companion app runs in the Windows system tray and, with just a few clicks, allows users to check for updates and install the latest version of the plugin. It also ensures that both the plugin files and the associated licence remain up to date. Using the Auto-Update Service is the recommended approach for a smooth and reliable installation experience.

Key features

  • Merge multiple meshes
Combine various objects into a single, selectable mesh to simplify model management and enhance performance.

  • Convert from ASCII to binary
Transform SKP files from ASCII to binary format for better compatibility and performance.

  • Optimise geometry
Reduce model complexity while maintaining essential details to ensure smoother operation in VU.CITY.

  • Correct visual issues
Address common visual problems such as shading and face orientation to improve model appearance.

  • Geolocation
Convert latitude and longitude coordinates within the model to OSGB format supported by VU.CITY, ensuring accurate placement within the platform.
  • UI

Export units and orientation

The exported FBX file will retain the original SKP model’s scale units, typically inches. The plugin allows for orientation adjustments to match either SketchUp or AutoCAD standards by toggling the respective checkbox.

  • Installation instructions

    1. Download the installer onto your PC.

    2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    3. A shortcut to the plugin will be added to your desktop for easy access.

Pin and set as default

Pin the plugin to your taskbar or set it as the default application for all SKP files.
