Assigning a primary file
Last updated: 23 December 2025 16:29 BSTSetting a primary file allows to specify which save file should be considered the main working space. Once it's been set, when you next click 'Launch 3D' it will open the file by default.
Why would I set a primary file?
Setting a primary file can be particularly useful when you have several versions of your project. The primary file can be considered the main workspace, while the other VU files can be used to experiment with different ideas. You can easily reassign which VU file is considered to be primary, and if necessary you can merge elements from one save file to another. To learn more about how to do that, visit our 'Merge projects' guide.
Setting a primary file
When launching the 3D application from a project for the first time, the project admin will be prompted to select a primary file. To update it/change it:
- Access project details
Navigate to the "Project info" section of your project dashboard. This is where the primary file and other crucial project details are managed. Click on "Edit Project". - Identify the primary file section
Within the project details, locate the "Primary file" field. This field shows the current file set as the primary resource for the project. - Change the primary file
To update the primary file, click on the “Set primary VU file” button. This will allow you to select a new file to set as the primary. This option will open a dialog box where you can choose a file from your project drive. - Save changes
After selecting the new primary file, ensure you save the changes by clicking the “Save changes” button at the bottom of the page.
This process helps maintain the integrity and central coordination of your project by ensuring that the most relevant and updated file is always in use.
Only users with administrative rights can change the primary file. This ensures that critical project data is managed securely and only modified by authorised personnel.
