Creating your first model

Last updated: 23 December 2025 16:29 BST

Creating your first model in VU.CITY is a straightforward process designed to help you bring your urban planning visions to life. This guide outlines the steps to get you started, from initial setup to final adjustments.

  1. Access the Create tool
Open VU.CITY and navigate to the Create Tool from the main menu (Developments / Create).

  2. Respecting or ignoring buildings
Decide whether to respect existing buildings (placing your model on top of current structures) or ignore them (placing your model on the terrain).

  3. Placing points
    -
Click to place points that outline the base of your model.
    - Use the Shift key to snap to 15º angle increments and Esc to restart placement if needed.

  4. Editing points and faces
    -
Double left-click on a face to enter point mode, allowing you to add, remove, or move points.
    - Use keyboard shortcuts such as Alt + left-click to remove points, and Shift to multi-select consecutive points or faces.

  5. Adjusting model position and rotation
    -
Click the position icon to place a gizmo on your model’s origin, then drag to adjust its position.
    - Switch to rotation mode to rotate the model using the gizmo handles or enter precise values manually.

  6. Finalising the model
Save your model to the Project Drive or Personal Drive, including all import settings and adjustments.

Using the VU.CITY Create for quick sketches

The VU.CITY Create can be used as an alternative to CAD/BIM software for quickly sketching proposals directly within the VU.CITY context. This feature allows for immediate visualisation of your ideas in a real-world urban environment. Once the preliminary design is completed, it can be exported to SiteSolve or other applications for further refinement and detailed design work. This workflow enables rapid iteration and helps bridge the gap between initial concept and detailed planning.

  • Utilise keyboard shortcuts
Enhance your efficiency by using the provided shortcuts for quick adjustments and refinements.

  • Preview and adjust
Continuously preview your model and make necessary adjustments to ensure accuracy and alignment with your design intentions.

  • Save regularly
Save your progress frequently to avoid losing any changes and to keep your project up to date.
