Navigation, compass

Last updated: 16 June 2026 17:48 BST

The compass menu helps orient the view in a scene and switch between 2D, 3D, and point-of-view (POV) modes. It allows quick alignment of the camera to a chosen direction, making it easier to navigate and explore the model from different perspectives.

Using the navigation compass

To use the navigation compass:

  1. Hover over the compass icon to expand it into a larger, movable version. Clicking the icon again closes the compass.
  2. Move the cursor over the centre of the compass to rotate the camera view.
  3. Click N, S, W, or E to align that direction to the top of the view.
  4. Click the 3D button or press spacebar to switch between 2D and 3D modes. Clicking again toggles back.
  5. Click the person icon to enter POV mode. The icon shows a small avatar while active, and clicking it again exits POV mode.

The compass also supports orbiting, panning, and rotating depending on the selected mode.

Point-of-view (POV) mode

POV mode allows navigation of the scene from a ground-level perspective, simulating how a person would experience the environment at street height. When enabled, the camera moves through the scene rather than orbiting around it, making it useful for assessing scale, visibility, and spatial relationships at pedestrian level. POV mode can be entered from the compass menu and exited at any time to return to standard 2D or 3D navigation.

Viewpoint Pilot navigation

Viewpoint Pilot is a first-person navigation mode available within Viewpoints. For details on the navigation controls, read the full guide.

Differences and similarities with the legacy VU.CITY App
  • A new compass menu with a small compass and quick access to 2D / 3D / POV modes.
  • Functions the same as the previous VU.CITY compass, but is now hidden by default in the compass menu and can be moved when expanded.
  • A dedicated 2D/3D button allows switching between modes via the pop-up compass or the spacebar shortcut.
  • A POV option is now included in the compass menu, replacing the previous walk camera function in the camera tool.
