User permissions
Last updated: 16 June 2026 17:48 BSTPermissions control access to files and folders in VU.CITY drive and define what actions users can take, such as viewing, uploading, editing, or managing access.
Permissions in VU.CITY follow a cascading model, meaning that permissions set on a folder automatically apply to all files and subfolders contained within it. This behaviour, known as inherited permissions, ensures that access remains consistent across related content. As folders and files are selected, the current access and permission levels are visible for the selected item, including both inherited and explicit permissions
Inherited permissions
Inherited permissions are controlled by the parent folder and automatically apply to all subfolders and files. These permissions cannot be removed or reduced on individual items. A subfolder or file can, however, gain higher access if an explicit permission is applied to it. Explicit permissions applied to folders will be inherited by all subfolders and files.
Explicit permissions
Explicit permissions are manually assigned to a specific file or folder. When an explicit permission grants a higher level of access than an inherited permission, it takes precedence for the affected user while leaving inherited permissions in place. This ensures that both inherited and explicit permissions are considered, with the highest level determining effective access.
Highest permission applies
When both inherited and explicit permissions are present for a user, the higher of the two always takes effect. This approach ensures that users retain the maximum access granted to them, whether through the folder hierarchy or through individual assignments.
File movement and permission inheritance
When a file is moved into a new folder, it automatically inherits the permissions of that folder. If the file already has an explicit permission that grants a higher level of access, this permission remains in effect after the move, preserving any elevated access that has been intentionally assigned.
Permission levels
VU.CITY provides four distinct permission levels, each defining the scope of access and control a user has over files and folders.
Admin
Admin access provides full control over all files and folders within the organisation. At least one admin must be assigned to each organisation. This role is managed by VU.CITY account managers and cannot be removed by users.
Owner
Owner access provides full control over a specific file or folder, including the ability to manage permissions. Multiple owners can be assigned to a single item, allowing flexible oversight.
Editor
Editor access allows a user to modify file content and manage permissions, with the exception of assigning owners. This ensures that content can be updated while maintaining the integrity of the permission hierarchy.
Viewer
Viewer access allows users to view files for which they have been granted permission, without the ability to edit, save, or export any content. This includes preventing the export of screenshots or models from the 3D app, ensuring that read-only access is maintained across all platforms.
