Select tool and movement gizmo

Last updated: 16 June 2026 17:48 BST

The select tool is the default interaction mode in VU.CITY and the primary way to interact with elements in a scene. It enables selection of a wide range of items, including imported and created models, viewpoints, data layers, points, lines, areas, surfaces and analysis outputs. Once selected, elements can be repositioned, rotated or adjusted vertically using the movement gizmo.

The select tool and movement gizmo combine several previously separate functions into a single, streamlined workflow. Selection, movement, rotation and vertical adjustment are now consolidated in one tool.

Selecting elements

The Select tool is active when a file is opened. It can also be activated by clicking its icon in the toolbar or by pressing 1 on the keyboard.

  1. Enter select mode by clicking on the select tool in the toolbar, or press 1 on the keyboard.
  2. Hover over an element until the cursor changes to a hand pointer and the element highlights (red outline or red fill for points).
  3. Click an element to select it. The Movement gizmo appears.
  4. The element’s properties panel opens from the right. For models, the settings tab is shown by default.
  5. Selecting a new element automatically deselects the previous one.

Using the movement gizmo

The Movement gizmo provides three main functions: moving, rotating, and adjusting height.

Move elements

  1. Hover over the inner disc of the gizmo until it expands and highlights.
  2. Click and drag the disc or centre point to reposition.
  3. Positioning updates live in the properties panel.
  4. Click on the canvas to confirm the new position.
  5. Press Esc to cancel.

Rotate elements

  1. Hover on the gizmo’s outer ring until it highlights and a red tracking ball is displayed.
  2. Click the outer ring to fix the red ball in place and activate a white arc that tracks cursor movement.
  3. Rotate the element by dragging the arc. Rotation degrees appear beside the cursor and update as the element rotates.
  4. Click again to confirm.
  5. Press Esc to cancel.

Move elements up or down

  1. Hover on the gizmo’s red arrow until it highlights.
  2. Click and drag the arrow to move the element up or down.
  3. Positioning updates live in the properties panel as the element is moved.
  4. Release the mouse to confirm.
  5. Press Esc to cancel.

Deselect elements

Press Esc to deselect an element if no movement or rotation is in progress.

Differences and similarities with the legacy VU.CITY App
  • Previously the selection tool was linked to the objects - movement gizmo in import and create, select in highlight and hide.
  • The Select tool is now explicitly shown in the toolbar and can be activated with a shortcut key (1).
  • Movement, rotation, and vertical adjustment are consolidated in a single gizmo, with live updates in the properties panel.
  • The advanced positioning toolbar appears when models are selected, replacing the developments key when active.
  • Selection feedback is more obvious (red outline, emissive effects, and gizmo visibility).
