Seats and permissions
Last updated: 20 October 2026 17:44 BSTEvery member of an Organisation has a seat type and a set of access permissions. These settings work together to determine which parts of VU.CITY a member can use, what they can manage at Organisation level and what they can do with individual files and folders.
There are three separate aspects to consider:
- Seat type determines whether the member can access the VU.CITY 3D platform.
- Organisation role determines whether the member can manage the Organisation.
- Folder and file permissions determine what the member can do with specific content.
These settings are managed separately. For instructions on changing seats or access for existing members, see Managing seats and access. For detailed information about folder and file permissions, see Permissions.
Seat types
There are two seat types: Maker and Contributor.
Maker
A Maker seat provides access to the Hub and the VU.CITY 3D platform.
Maker seats are assigned to a single named user and are limited by the Organisation’s subscription.
Contributor
A Contributor seat provides access to the Hub but not the VU.CITY 3D platform.
Contributors can work with files and folders in the Hub where they have the appropriate permissions, but cannot access the 3D platform or create VU.CITY 3D files. Contributor seats are unlimited.
Organisation roles
Organisation rights are separate from the seat type and determine whether a member can manage the Organisation.
There are three roles: Super Admin, Admin and Member.
Super Admin
Super Admin is the protected Organisation-level admin role. It has full administration rights and can only be assigned or removed by VU.CITY.
Admin
Admins can manage Organisation members and their seat types. They also have access to all folders and files in the Organisation.
Member
Members do not have admin rights. Access to folders and files depends on the permissions assigned to the member.
Folder and file permissions
Folder and file permissions provide a separate level of access for individual content.
Permissions determine what a member can do with a folder or file, such as viewing, editing or managing its contents. Permissions can be inherited from a parent folder or assigned directly to a specific folder or file.
The available permission levels are Owner, Editor and Viewer. Organisation Admins have access to all folders and files.
For the full explanation of permission levels, inherited and explicit permissions, Limited folders and how permissions are affected when content is moved, see Permissions.
How the settings work together
A member’s overall access can be understood by looking at the three settings together.
For example, a Contributor can access the Hub but cannot access the VU.CITY 3D platform. Within the Hub, the Contributor’s access to individual folders and files depends on the permissions assigned to them.
A Maker has access to the VU.CITY 3D platform, but access to specific Hub content is still determined by folder and file permissions unless the member has admin rights.
An Admin has Organisation-level management rights and access to all folders and files. Their seat type still determines whether they can access the VU.CITY 3D platform.
- Seat type - Access to the VU.CITY 3D platform - Managed by Organisation Admins
- Organisation roles - Organisation management - Managed by VU.CITY
- Folder and file permissions - Access to individual content - Managed according to the permissions assigned on a file or folder
