Introduction to the new VU.CITY app

The new VU.CITY 3D application provides an updated environment for exploring and analysing 3D models, with improved performance and a reworked toolset designed for ongoing development.

The application supports project-based workflows, allowing teams to access, manage, and review models within a shared space. Core tools are available for navigation, analysis, and collaboration, with additional functionality continuing to be introduced over time.

  • New VU.CITY

Section 1 - The basics

  • Model navigation

    Navigate around the 3D model using the mouse and keyboard.

    Move around a site, area or individual building, and adjust the camera position to view the model from the required perspective.

  • The Hub

    The Hub is used to store, organise and manage VU.CITY files and projects.

    Create folders, upload and manage files, and control access using permissions. Files and assets can be shared with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Scenes

    Scenes save a specific view of the model, including the visual settings, date, time, environment and selected assets.

    Create multiple Scenes to explore different design options, compare proposals or prepare views for presentations.

  • Timeline

    Use the Timeline to explore how the model changes over time.

    Adjust the date and time to view different lighting conditions, weather and consented developments. Uploaded models and datasets can also be associated with specific dates.

  • BIM and custom model import

    Import detailed 3D models into VU.CITY and position them in their geographic location.

    Models can include detailed building geometry, materials, textured facades and interior layouts, allowing proposals to be viewed in their surrounding context.

What’s new

The new VU.CITY platform introduces an updated Unreal Engine-based environment with faster, more responsive navigation and improved visual quality.

New functionality also makes it easier to manage and present project work:

  • Scenes provide a new way to save and compare different views, environments, dates, times and assets.
  • Viewpoints work alongside Scenes to create and reuse camera setups for different scenarios.
  • Timeline provides 4D visualisation, including time-based developments, sun paths and shadows, with support for timestamped uploaded models and datasets.
  • BIM and custom model import supports larger and more detailed models, including materials, textured facades and interior layouts.
  • The Hub provides more granular permissions for securely sharing files and assets with internal and external stakeholders.

Section 2 - Visualise and analyse data

  • Viewpoints

    Create and save viewpoints that can be used across multiple Scenes.

    Configure capture settings and export images individually or in bulk.

  • Custom data

    Import point, line, area, mesh and raster datasets into VU.CITY.

    Once imported, data can be styled, filtered and sorted to highlight specific information or compare different datasets.

  • 2D drawing

    Use the drawing tools to add points, lines and areas directly to the canvas.

    Drawings can be used to plan, measure and annotate the model. Configure styles and add metadata to drawings as required.

  • Public Data Library

    The Public Data Library provides access to datasets covering a range of categories.

    Add public datasets to the canvas, then apply filters and custom styles to focus on the information required.

  • Mesh data

    Import and visualise 3D mesh datasets with associated attributes. Use attributes to filter the data and apply custom styles to highlight specific elements. Time-series attributes can also be used to show different phases or changes over time.

  • Time-series data

    Import datasets containing time-based attributes and visualise changes across different dates.

    Time-series data can be displayed directly on the 4D city model, allowing past, present and future states to be analysed within the same context.

What’s new

The new VU.CITY platform expands the range of spatial data that can be imported, visualised and analysed directly on the canvas.

Key updates include:

  • Viewpoints replace the previous Camera Studies functionality and provide advanced capture options, including lens and sensor presets and orthographic projection.
  • Custom spatial data can be imported from your own, third-party or consultant datasets and combined with data from the Public Data Library.
  • Mesh data is now supported, allowing 3D datasets and their associated attributes to be visualised directly within the city model.
  • Time-series data can be used to visualise changes across multiple dates and analyse data in a 4D context.
  • 2D drawing has been updated with improved drawing controls, custom styling, metadata and locked-plane drawing.
  • Public data can now be filtered and styled to create more targeted views and outputs.
