Navigation - pilot mode
Last updated: 24 June 2026 18:53 BSTViewpoint Pilot is a first-person navigation mode available within Viewpoints. For an overview of Viewpoints and how they are created and managed, see Viewpoints.
Viewpoint Pilot enables first-person navigation within a VU.CITY Viewpoint using keyboard controls. It supports two modes - Free Cam and Walk Mode - switched via the Walk Mode toggle in the Viewpoint settings panel.
Free Cam
Free Cam enables unrestricted movement through the model in any direction. The camera passes through buildings and geometry without obstruction. Looking up or down also changes the direction of travel, so the camera moves toward whatever it is facing. E and Q move the camera straight up or down regardless of where it is pointing.
This mode is suited for inspecting massing, internal geometry, and spatial relationships without terrain constraints.
Walk Mode
Walk Mode keeps the camera at a fixed height of 1.6 m and moves it along the ground surface, giving an eye-level perspective. The camera follows terrain height changes automatically and steps up small obstacles such as kerbs and steps up to 0.75 m. Anything taller than this blocks movement and must be navigated around.
Looking up or down changes the view but does not affect the direction of travel - the camera always moves horizontally along the ground.
When Walk Mode is enabled, the camera moves smoothly to the nearest ground position before navigation begins.
Both modes share the same core controls, with differences in vertical movement, collision behaviour, and how direction is interpreted relative to the camera or ground plane.
Pilot Controls
The following hotkeys control movement, rotation, and view adjustment within Viewpoint Pilot.
W / S move forward / backward.
A / D move left / right without changing the direction the camera faces
Left / Right arrow keys turn the camera left or right
Up / Down arrow keys look up or down (range is limited in Walk Mode)
[ / ] decrease / increase movement speed
, / . decrease / increase rotation speed
= / - zoom in / zoom out
In Free Cam, W and S move in the direction the camera is facing, including diagonally when looking up or down. In Walk Mode, movement is always horizontal along the ground. The vertical range of the Up / Down arrow keys is limited in Walk Mode.
Vertical movement (Free Cam only)
E move up
Q move down
These controls have no effect in Walk Mode.
