Network connectivity test
Last updated: 20 October 2026 17:44 BSTThe VU.CITY Network Connectivity Test checks whether a device and network meet the requirements for using VU.CITY. It can be used before getting started to identify potential connectivity issues, or when troubleshooting connection and streaming problems.
The test runs in the browser at networktest.vu.city and requires no installation or sign-in.
Running the test
The test starts automatically when the page opens and takes around 30 seconds to complete. The 21 checks are grouped into six categories:
- Test Server
Confirms that the test server can be reached over HTTP and WebSocket. - External Connectivity
Checks general HTTPS and WebSocket access, STUN reachability and whether the TURN relay used to route live video can be reached from the network. - VU.CITY Services
Confirms that the VU.CITY API and its WebSocket endpoint can be reached. - Codec & WebRTC
Checks that the browser supports H.264 and AV1 video decoding. - Speed Test
Measures latency, download speed and upload speed. - Pixel Stream
Opens a live stream to confirm that the connection is established, video is received, input is sent back and the stream performs consistently.
For the most accurate results, run the test on the same device, browser and network used for day-to-day work, including any VPN or proxy.
If another user is running the test at the same time, a message appears and speed and stream results may be affected. Run the test again shortly afterwards using Run Again.
Decode Benchmark
The Decode Benchmark is a separate test that measures how well the device decodes video. It tests both AV1 and H.264 at different resolutions, including the 1080p resolution used by VU.CITY.
The benchmark is mainly used to investigate streaming issues on devices that pass the connectivity checks, particularly where video decoding may be affecting performance. It downloads approximately 33 MB of data in total.
If any checks fail or return warnings, select ‘Send to Support’ to open a new email with the full test report already included. Alternatively, ‘Copy Report’ copies the results so they can be shared with an IT administrator alongside the Network configuration article.
