Model import

Models can be imported to a scene either at a geolocated position or at the camera’s current view for non-geolocated models. This function is accessed via the VU menu and allows selecting files from the Hub drive, monitoring progress, handling errors, and navigating to imported models in the scene.

Import process

To import models:

  1. Open the VU menu from the global bar and click Import → Models.
  2. Select files from the Hub drive using the checkboxes; the Import button shows the number of selected items.
  3. Click import to start. The process queue drawer opens automatically or adds items to the existing queue.

Monitoring and managing imports

The process queue drawer provides live updates and controls:

  • Shows ‘Importing to [scene name]’ while the upload is in progress and ‘Processing’ as the model is prepared.
  • Displays success or failure messages when complete.
  • Cancel individual imports with the ‘x’ on the model card or cancel all in-progress imports with the cancel all button.
  • Clear completed or failed imports using the individual or clear all buttons.
  • Navigate directly to a successfully imported model by clicking its link, which selects the model, opens the properties panel, and displays the adjustments toolbar.

Non-geolocated and duplicated models

Models without geolocation are placed at the current camera view to ensure visibility. Duplicate files are imported as new instances, with naming managed according to the scene and existing in-app names.

Model Properties

Once a model has been imported, its properties can be adjusted from the Properties panel. The available options allow the model’s visibility, position, appearance and annotations to be controlled.

Visibility
Toggle Visibility on or off to show or hide the model in the scene.

Position
The Position section controls the model’s location and orientation.

  • Coordinate system - select the coordinate system used to define the model’s geographic position. The selected coordinate system determines how the Eastings, Northings and AOD values are interpreted and ensures the model is positioned correctly in the scene.
  • Easting (m)
  • Northing (m)
  • AOD (m) - height above ordnance datum
  • Bearing (degrees) - horizontal rotation
  • Scale factor

Orientation
Select whether the model uses Z-up or Y-up orientation.

Opacity

Adjust the Opacity slider from 0–100% to make the model more or less transparent.

Fill Colour

Use the colour picker to change the model’s Fill colour. The fill colour also has its own opacity control.

X-Ray

X-Ray allows the model’s contours to be viewed through neighbouring geometry, including parts of the model positioned below the terrain.

Use the colour picker and opacity control to customise the X-Ray appearance.

Outline only can be toggled on or off to display the X-Ray view as an outline rather than a filled model.

Annotations

Annotations can be added to the selected model using the '+' button. An annotation can also be associated with other scene objects, such as drawn lines or points.

Click '–' next to an annotation to remove it.

Each annotation can be customised using the following options:

  • Placement - adjust where the annotation appears in relation to the model.
  • Type - choose between Detail field and Free text.
  • Detail - select information to display, such as the model’s name, creation date or last edited date.
  • Anchor line visibility - toggle the line connecting the annotation to the model on or off.
  • Position - switch the annotation between horizontal and vertical placement.
Differences and similarities with the legacy 3D app
  • Previously, models could be imported via drag-and-drop or if they were previously uploaded to Hub, through the developments menu. Now the import menu can be accessed from the VU menu in the global bar.
  • Progress monitoring, cancellation, and clearing are now handled via the process queue drawer, rather than pop-ups or notifications.
  • Models are imported into the scene that was active when the import process was started; non-geolocated models are placed at the centre of the screen, so users will see them appear if they remain in the same camera position.
