City model boundary files

Last updated: 29 October 2026 13:00 BST

VU.CITY provides a downloadable boundary file for each city model on the platform. Each file defines the geographical area covered by the city’s 3D model.

The files are provided in GeoJSON format and can be opened in standard GIS software. They can be used to check whether a site falls within a VU.CITY model’s coverage or to clip datasets to the modelled area before importing them into VU.CITY.

There is one boundary file per city, with each file named after the corresponding city. Each file contains the coverage boundary as a polygon or multipolygon.

Some cities, including London and Leeds, have multiple separate areas of coverage. Their boundaries are therefore represented as multipolygons within a single file.

Each boundary file uses the local projected coordinate reference system (CRS) associated with that city’s model. The CRS varies by region:

Great Britain

Ireland and Northern Ireland

Denmark

United States

Working with boundary files

The boundary files use the coordinate reference system associated with their respective VU.CITY city models. When clipping data for import, ensure the dataset uses the appropriate CRS for the city model.

Boundary files can be opened in GIS software to view the extent of a VU.CITY city model alongside other geographical data.

They can be used to:

  • Check model coverage: Determine whether a site or area of interest falls within the geographical boundary of a VU.CITY model.
  • Clip datasets: Restrict a dataset to the area covered by the city model before importing it into VU.CITY.
  • Review coverage: Visualise the model boundary alongside other GIS layers to understand the extent of the available 3D model.

Attributes

Each boundary carries the following attributes:

city Name of the city model

target_crs EPSG code of the file’s coordinate reference system

bbox Rectangular extent of the model area

center Centre point of the model area

bottom_left_x, bottom_left_y Coordinates of the bottom-left corner of the extent
